April 9th, 2007

Digital hearing aids are taking over the hearing implements market today.  These devices made a come back a decade after its first prototypes were abandoned in the 1980s owing to its inconvenient size and battery usage.  The rise in demand for these digital hearing aids have driven manufacturers and innovators to come up with newer, better, and more cost-efficient models.  There are pros and cons to using these digital hearing aids.  Obviously, one of it greatest benefits is the ease of hearing it gives to the person wearing it.  Most of these digital hearing aids are equipped with an optional directional microphone that allows the wearer to zoom in on a particular sound source instead of picking up all the background noise.  There is no one size fits all digital hearing aid.  You have to consult with your audiologist or your hearing care professional to make sure that you are buying the right kind of equipment for your level of hearing loss.

Modern digital hearing aids are now more discreet, more convenient to use, and more functional.  Compared to analog hearing aids, digital hearing aids offer better sound quality and more customizable features.  Digital hearing aids, however, cost more than analog hearing aids.  The difference in cost is justifiable with the vast improvement of the quality of sound rendered by digital hearing aids versus those of analog hearing aids.  Hearing care clinics have reported a decreasing amount of requests for analog hearing aids as people are growing to favor digital ones despite the costs.

These digital hearing aids are more comfortable to use.  The major set back of these digital devices when it was initially introduced in the market was its bulkiness.  A decade after, in the mid-1990s, the digital hearing aid was relaunched in smaller more convenient units.  The digital hearing aid processes the sounds effectively using filters to reduce environmental noise and feedback.  These noise factors are not remedied by analog hearing aids.  Speech enhancement features in these modern digital hearing aids likewise add to the appeal of these devices.

A lot of these digital hearing aids are now available from various manufacturers.  You can find one that best works for your hearing loss level in a price range that is reasonable.  These digital devices are available for as low as a little over a thousand dollars to as high as about three thousand dollars.  Just like in any major purchase, you should check out your options and do your research by reading hearing aid reviews before deciding on your final choice.  Anything health related should be consulted with a qualified medical practitioner.  Make sure your choice of digital hearing aid is guided by an audiologist or a hearing care professional.

There are still a lot of developments going on in the hearing aid industry.  This digital device continues to be the subject of researches and studies in order to improve its performance.  Manufacturers are constantly trying to enhance the digital hearing aid to make it more attractive.  Hopefully, these manufacturers would also be able to drive the prices of these hearing aids down real soon.
